Evolution of Power Motor: How DC Brushless Motor Came to Be

Electrical equipment relies on the presence of a motor to operate it. There are all types of motors that are used in the industry depending on the application. These days, the trend has been shifting towards the use of DC brushless motorinstead of the conventional brush types.

One of the reasons why DC brushless motor is fast becoming the preferred motor of choice in modern times is how more efficient it is. Unlike its conventional counterpart, it is less noisy. The speed is also significantly faster. While brushed motors have been the widely preferred choice for quite some time, there are numerous drawbacks to them that lend to the introduction of the DC brushless motor.

In the past, brush motors are used in many applications since they are inexpensive. They are also easy to control thanks to the fact that its commutation phase is done mechanically through the brushes inside the motor. However, the drawbacks with this type of motor are quite glaring. The fact that it has brushes means that they are going to wear out over time. They will require replacement after a certain period. They also pose a high risk when used in explosive environments due to the sparking that they produce.

The introduction of the DC brushless motor has brought forth some considerable changes to the landscape. For one, the problem pertaining to wear and tear of the brushes has been eliminated as the windings of this power motor are on the actual stator. While this used to be an expensive technology before, over time, it has become more affordable which has resulted in more widespread use.

The velocity of the DC brushless motor is not determined by the voltage but by how frequent the current is supplied to the motor. This makes it more efficient compared to its brushed counterpart. It is not how much energy is supplied, but how often that is the running principle here. There is less energy loss from friction in brushless motors which results in improved efficiency.

Noise is greatly reduced with the use of a DC brushless motor. It is able to operate at a much higher speed. Since there will be no sparking produced when it rotates, it is a much safer option to use.

However, brushless power motors do have their own fair share of downsides too. For one, they are more expensive than the brush ones. There is only a limited amount of power that can be supplied to them or they will overheat which can then lead to the magnets weakening.

Still, it is a fact that brushless motors are not only efficient. They are more reliable too. Considering how they are maintenance free when operated, and they have a much higher life expectancy, it is expected that even more of them will be integrated into the electronics industry.
